Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Pegasus Therapy Laser work?

When the photons of light penetrate the skin and underlying tissue, they are absorbed by the cell, and converted into energy, thereby the cell membrane permeability is altered, this triggers a cascade of cellular events including:

  • Stimulation of ATP
  • Stimulation of respiratory chain
  • Increased DNA and RNA synthesis
  • Increased levels of beta endorphins and serotonin
  • Enhanced collagen synthesis

What advantages does the Pegasus Therapy Laser have over other forms of treatment?

Laser Therapy does not require the use of drugs or surgery, and there are less side effects or risks than other forms of treatment. In addition, it can often achieve results faster than other treatment modalities.

How are Pegasus Therapy Laser treatments administered?

Treatments are performed by positioning the laser wand approximately ½” directly above the skin. Generally there is no discomfort or pain associated with a treatment. Various areas may be treated including:

  • Directly over the site of injury or lesion
  • Acupuncture points
  • Trigger points or tender points
  • Nerve roots or superficial nerve trucks

Is the Pegasus Therapy Laser the only modality required for treatment?

The Pegasus Therapy Laser can be used as a single therapy or adjunctive therapy in combination with other manual therapies or electro-modalities such as acupuncture, massage therapy and ultrasound.

Does the Pegasus Therapy Laser affect only the area being treated?

There are multiple areas affected positively with the Pegasus Therapy Laser:
Local area: there are direct benefits over the affected injury.
Regional area: there are positive effects in the surrounding tissue.
Systemic: there are broader effects evident through increased cell membrane permeability and chemical mediators carried in the blood, lymphatic and nervous systems

Does a treatment hurt a horse? What does a treatment feel like?

A treatment does not provide any pain. The only sensation is a mild, soothing warmth. Horses have been known to fall asleep during a treatment.

Is the Pegasus Therapy Laser Safe to Use? Are there Side Effects?

Laser Therapy has been in use for over thirty years around the world. There have been almost no side effects reported. Occasionally some old injuries or pain syndromes may feel aggravated for a few days, as the healing response becomes more active after a treatment.

A Safety Guide is provided with each laser, with specific procedures to follow for maximum safety and proper use.

In addition, there are protective eye-wear provided for the person administering the laser treatment, specially designed eye-wear for the horse during treatment.
